2017 Carbon-Neutral Home in Harrisonburg, VA
The main goal of this house was carbon neutral energy use. Energy generated by the 7.6 KW solar system (and saved by robost insulation) is expected to offset any embodied energy as a result of construction. The hope is that it will also include the carbon footprint of operations and lifestyle, i.e. electric car charging, airline travel, and other impact that the owner and family have on our earth. In addition, measures were taken with the geothermal HVAC system to maintain and promote excellent indoor air quality through a whole house ERV (energy recovery ventilator), additional air filtration, and a UV lamp placed on the coils of the airhandler. The contemporary style of the house was meant to hold clean lines and includes beautiful views, heavy timber stairs (site-built), cable railing for stairs and exterior deck railing, and simple trim.
